The 1,000 Most Common Swahili Words

Ranked by real-world frequency. Study all of them free with spaced repetition.

This page collects common Swahili words in one ranked reference list, covering nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs as they occur in real usage rather than in a textbook's arbitrary order. Instead of guessing which words matter, you can work straight down a list ordered by frequency, so early study time goes to words like kuwa (to be), watu (people) and wakati (time) before rarer vocabulary.

Because the list is ranked, it doubles as a study roadmap: learn the first hundred words solidly before moving further down, and you will already recognise much of the vocabulary that recurs in everyday Swahili speech and writing. Use it alongside the Vocab Voyage flashcard app to drill each word with spaced repetition, typing the Swahili term for an English prompt until recall is automatic.
