Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between cheza and kucheza, or shinda and kushinda?

Each pair is translated the same way here (to play, to win), but kucheza and kushinda carry the ku- infinitive prefix. Both shapes turn up in real sentences, so it helps to be able to type either when prompted.

How should I practise this Swahili sport and leisure vocabulary?

Use Vocab Voyage's spaced repetition to type the Swahili word from the English prompt, then go back to the example sentence so you meet words like mchezo = game, timu = team, or ushindani = competition in context rather than in isolation.

Is this list enough to talk about a football match in Swahili?

It gives you the core building blocks, such as kandanda = football, mpira = ball, wachezaji = players, mshambuliaji = striker, mashabiki = fans, kocha = coach, and mabingwa = champions, which is plenty to describe teams, players, and results. You'll still want to add more vocabulary for specific matches.
