Tips

Nouns ending in -eur that name a person doing something, like joueur (player) and tireur (shooter), are masculine - learn them as "le joueur", "le tireur" rather than as bare words.
Sports terms borrowed from English are usually masculine in French: le golf, le match. When in doubt with a borrowed sports word, masculine is the safer guess.
Watch irregular plurals: jeu becomes jeux, not "jeus". Many nouns ending in -eu take an -x in the plural, so drill jeu/jeux as a pair.
Most verbs on this list are regular -er verbs (jouer, danser, sauter, monter, amuser, chasser), so one conjugation pattern covers a lot of ground.
Spelling-change -er verbs still need care: nager takes an extra e before endings starting with a or o (nous nageons), and lancer takes a cedilla (nous lançons).
courir and battre are irregular, so practise their forms separately instead of assuming they behave like the -er verbs in this list.

How do I remember the gender of French sport words like match, stade and piscine?

Sport nouns borrowed from English, such as match and golf, are generally masculine, but meaning alone won't tell you the rest: stade is masculine while piscine is feminine. Learn each word with its article (le match, le stade, la piscine) from the start.

What's the difference between jeu and jouer in French?
