Tips

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between pół and połowa?

Pół is neuter and usually joins with another noun in the genitive to mean 'half of' something, while połowa is a feminine noun that stands on its own and takes feminine adjective endings.

Are Polish quantity words like ilość and większość hard because of gender?

Not once you notice the pattern: abstract nouns ending in -ość, including ilość, wysokość and większość, are feminine, so treating that ending as a gender cue saves you memorising each word separately.

What's the best way to practise Polish numbers and quantities vocabulary?

Learn each noun together with its gender and a short example sentence, as shown on this page, then use Vocab Voyage's flashcards to type the Polish word from an English prompt - repetition with recall is what makes words like kwota, suma and procent stick.
