Tips

Several entries here are compound nouns, such as politistasjon and bensinstasjon; in Norwegian a compound takes the gender of its final element, so learning that last part settles the gender of the whole word.
Words for general areas and zones in this topic are often neuter: sted, område, hjørne, distrikt, strøk and sentrum all take et, so practise them with that article attached.
Norwegian has two everyday words for 'place' -- sted and plass -- and two for 'bridge' -- bro and bru; drill each pair together so you do not default to only one.
Do not let gate mislead you: it means 'street', not the English 'gate', so flag it as a false friend the first time you meet it.
Group your review by article (en, ei, et) rather than alphabetically; recalling the gender along with the meaning is what you actually need when building a sentence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sted and plass?

Both can translate as 'place', but they differ in gender: sted is neuter and plass is feminine in this list. Learn each with its own article so the right form comes automatically.

Why are there two words for 'bridge', bro and bru?

Norwegian has two common words for a bridge: bro, listed here as masculine, and bru, listed as feminine. Both turn up in everyday use, so it is worth being able to produce one and recognise the other.

Does gate mean 'gate' as in English?

No -- despite the spelling, gate means 'street' in Norwegian. It is a good example of a false friend to double-check as you build this vocabulary.
