Norwegian Shopping & Clothes Vocabulary

Shopping and clothes are among the first things you need to talk about in Norwegian, whether you're comparing prices, asking for something in a shop, or just describing what you're wearing. This list covers the core vocabulary for the topic: verbs like kjøpe and kle, everyday items such as klær, sko, kjole, bukse, jakke and skjorte, and shopping words like billig, marked, kjøp and vare.

Each entry comes with its gender and a full example sentence, so you can see the word working in a real Norwegian phrase rather than as an isolated translation. In the Vocab Voyage app you're prompted with the English word and type the Norwegian answer yourself; spaced repetition brings words back right before you'd forget them, and accents are forgiven, so you can focus on the vocabulary itself.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

Does gender matter for Norwegian shopping and clothes words?

Yes, gender affects the article and the definite form. In this list klær, sko, kjøp, marked, mote and smykke are neuter, dress is masculine, and nouns such as kjole, bukse, jakke, skjorte, koffert, hanske, støvel and truse are feminine. Learning each word with its gender from the start prevents mistakes later.

Does dress mean 'a dress' in Norwegian?

No, it's a false friend: dress means suit. For the garment English calls a dress, use kjole.

How do I practise this vocabulary in Vocab Voyage?

You see the English prompt (for example 'to buy' or 'the jacket') and type the Norwegian answer (kjøpe, jakke) from memory. Spaced repetition resurfaces each word at the right time, accents are forgiven, and you can sign up free with an email address.
