This list covers the essential Catalan vocabulary for talking about cities, towns and everyday places: from ciutat (city) and poble (village) down to smaller features like carreró (alley) and font (fountain). Tips

Lean on the reliable feminine endings in this set: nouns ending in -ció (estació) and -tat (ciutat) are feminine, so you can often predict the gender before you check.
mapa is a trap for many learners: it ends in -a like most feminine nouns, but it is masculine (el mapa), so memorise it with its article rather than by its ending.
Gender isn't always guessable here — torre and font are feminine while castell and pont are masculine — so rehearse each noun with its definite article (la torre, el pont) instead of the bare word.
Note how carreró is built from carrer with the suffix -ó and stays masculine; spotting that link makes the 'alley' word much easier to recall.
Both barri and veïnat are masculine and translate as 'neighborhood'; make barri your default for production and keep veïnat for recognition.
Build short real-world sentences with these words — name the carrer you live on, the plaça nearby, the estació you use — so the vocabulary attaches to places you can actually picture.

What's the difference between barri and veïnat?

Both are masculine nouns translated as 'neighborhood'. barri is the more common everyday choice for a part of a city, so learn it first and treat veïnat as a word to recognise.

Is mapa really masculine in Catalan?

Yes — despite ending in -a, mapa (map) is masculine and takes el mapa. It's an exception worth memorising on its own rather than relying on the usual -a pattern.

How can I tell whether a place word is masculine or feminine?

Endings such as -ció (estació) and -tat (ciutat) are strong feminine signals, but exceptions exist, like the masculine mapa. The safest habit is to learn each noun together with its article, as shown in this list.
