Tips

Several nature nouns in this set end in -a and are feminine: pedra, estrella, lluna, muntanya, criatura, roca and bèstia. Grouping them together makes the pattern easy to remember.
Two feminine nouns here give no ending clue at all: neu and calor. Drill them with the article -- la neu, la calor -- especially if you are used to Spanish el calor.
Animal names in this list are masculine (gos, cavall, llop, corb, gat), so learn them as el gos, el llop and so on; the article is what shows the gender in a real sentence.
The list marks mar as masculine (el mar), which is worth fixing in your memory early if another Romance language has taught you a different gender for 'sea'.
Salvatge is an adjective with one form for both genders: un animal salvatge, una bèstia salvatge, and salvatges in the plural.
Practise in scenes rather than alphabetically -- bosc, arbre, llop and corb for a forest, or mar, riu, pedra and roca for water and landscape -- and write your own short sentences on the model of the examples given.

Frequently asked questions

Is mar masculine or feminine in Catalan?

In this list mar (sea) is masculine: el mar. It is worth memorising the article with the noun, since 'sea' does not have the same gender in every Romance language.

What is the difference between animal and bèstia in Catalan?

Animal is the general, neutral term, while bèstia is glossed here as 'beast' and carries a stronger, more colloquial tone. Both appear in the list with their gender and an example sentence, so you can compare how each is used.
