Catalan Travel & Transport Vocabulary

Getting around in Catalan means mastering two things at once: a small set of high-frequency motion verbs and the transport nouns that go with them. This themed list gathers the words you'll actually reach for when you book a hotel, catch a train or ask someone the best route across town. Tips

Learn anar, tornar, venir, sortir, arribar and marxar as one group: they are the core motion verbs, some of them are irregular, and drilling them side by side helps you feel the difference between sortir (to go out) and marxar (to leave).
Store each motion verb together with the preposition it usually takes, such as arribar a (to arrive at) and sortir de (to go out of), so you are not guessing mid-sentence.
Sort the transport nouns by gender as you learn them: cotxe, avió, tren, camió, taxi, vehicle, aeroport, hotel and campament are masculine, while moto, ruta, tenda and nau are feminine. Moto is worth flagging, since it ends in -o yet is feminine.
Catalan offers two words for ship, vaixell (masculine) and nau (feminine), so practise each with its own article instead of assuming one pattern covers every vessel.
Watch out for misleading look-alikes: conduir resembles English 'to conduct' but means 'to drive'. Reading the example sentence aloud each time helps fix the real meaning in your memory.
Reviews forgive missing accents, but write them anyway when you practise on paper, since words like avió and camió carry their accent in real Catalan spelling.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between anar, venir and tornar?

Anar means to go (movement away from the speaker), venir means to come (movement towards the speaker), and tornar means to return. Anar and venir are irregular and very frequent, so it pays to learn the three as a set.

Why is moto feminine if it ends in -o?

Moto is a shortened form of motocicleta, which is feminine, and the clipped form keeps that gender. So moto stays feminine despite the -o ending that more often signals masculine.

Are vaixell and nau the same word for ship?

Both translate as ship, but vaixell is masculine and nau is feminine. Treat them as near-synonyms rather than duplicates, and practise each with its own article.
