Dutch Numbers & Quantities Vocabulary

Numbers and quantities turn up everywhere in everyday Dutch: prices, distances, recipes and casual conversation all lean on words like aantal, hoeveelheid and procent. This list gathers practical Dutch vocabulary for counting, measuring and comparing amounts, so you can talk about "how many" and "how much" with confidence.

Rather than drilling isolated numerals, this set focuses on the vocabulary around them: units of measurement (meter, kilometer, gram, liter), ways to describe quantity (hoeveelheid, bedrag, gemiddelde) and everyday words such as paar, dozijn and kwartier. Each entry comes with its gender and an example sentence, so you can see the word at work before you practise it with spaced repetition.

Tips

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between aantal and hoeveelheid?

Aantal means 'number' and is used for countable things, as in the number of books, while hoeveelheid means 'quantity' and covers amounts you don't count individually, such as a quantity of water. Drilling them side by side helps you stop guessing between the two.

Which words here are easiest to mix up?

Graaf and tellen are the classic trap, since the English word 'count' covers both the title and the verb. Nummer and aantal are worth separating too: both can be translated as 'number' in English, but they are used differently in Dutch.

How should I practise this vocabulary if I already know the numbers 1-100?

Focus on the words that combine with numbers in real sentences: units such as kilometer, gram and procent, plus quantity words like bedrag, helft and gemiddelde. Typing them as part of full phrases, rather than as single words, builds the natural phrasing Dutch speakers use around amounts.
